Hospital Gaming and Technology
Therapeutic Gaming
We have a pediatric gaming technology coordinator聽who creates gaming and technology experiences for patients, and educates clinicians and families on the importance of gaming as a tool for patient distraction and coping. Virtual reality, augmented reality, and traditional gaming are used to keep patients connected to their friends and family, and help get patients out of bed and moving while hospitalized.聽
Benefits to gaming in the hospital can include:聽
- Connects patients with their peers and siblings outside the hospital and can create new connections and friendships inside the hospital
- Provides a sense of normalcy
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- Provides distraction from pain or a reduced perception of pain during recovery
- Encourages self-expression and communication聽
- Improves coping skills
- Encourages movement聽
- Empowers patients by giving a sense of control聽
We have lots of options for patients and families to engage with technology, including iPads, virtual reality headsets, handheld gaming devices, portable gaming systems, 3D printing, and more.聽聽
